Huffman Basketball Elite Training: The Negative Step
This week, our HB Tandem (our video feedback and accountability app) students are working on the Negative step!
One of the things we are working on in HB’s Tandem feedback and accountability app this week is the negative step. A few things we need to improve at an early age are the efficiency of movement off the dribble and catch, triple threat, and shooting technique with different footwork patterns.
This week’s focus is learning how to play out of triple threat and use the negative step to “step” on the gas and get by defenders out of triple threat.
1v1 Formats that Help the Negative Step:
At Huffman Basketball camps, we play blind 1v1 to help with this footwork.
Start the offensive player pressing the ball in the back of the defender (defender is facing the basket on the three-point line) in an athletic stance. Once the offense decides to go, they must rip the ball off the back, drop the required foot into the negative step and go!
The offense will use their right leg as the negative step by ripping the ball off the defender’s back and driving left. An offensive player must drop their left leg into the negative step by pulling and ripping the ball to the right and then driving right.
The offensive player can tell the defender which direction they’re going if they are advanced to create a more simulated game finish. As soon as the ball stops touching the back, the offense tries to score by ripping and pushing off their negative step leg.
Send me your videos on Tandem, your HB planner, and let’s draw a line in the sand about what kind of player you want to become!
I prefer you guys to split your shooting and skills workouts into AM and PM workouts. Your brain will learn and acquire skills so much faster this way!
This week’s goal is to get 700 shots combining the open step quick hop shooting footwork while using the negative step out of triple threat. Put a chair to practice your moves on the wings, top, and slots (45 degrees from elbow extended to three-point line), and get going!
Ps. Here’s last week's Tandem shooting footwork our elite players had to send me. Big shout out to Braden and Gavin Fralick, who got in 1400 shots this week! Who's gonna win this week's most shots award in Tandem! Shoot me an email if you want to know more or join!
